In today’s world where the quick and easy gets picked over the smart choice often many find themselves in a frustrating circle. Fast food, fad diets, getting “shredded” in 30 days, are all examples of the lure of the quick and hopefully easy.

Time and study shows that nothing lasts that is quick… that is why I suppose it’s quick. Folks that enter on a path of making smart choices… choosing the hard right versus the easy wrong, learn that their lives are changed FOREVER because of their following a path versus a fad. The cycle of loosing weight; gaining back more; trying to loose it again… can only be overcome by REAL and consistent work. Work is not really the right word because if you follow the path for 21 days, psychological studies show that if you begin to stray from the path your mind and body will MISS that “work”. Your body and your mind may not enjoy everything you do over the first 21 days of your path but after that point your body so enjoys the endorphins and the increased metabolism that if you slack off, your body and mind will tell you they miss the “work”. William Glasser’s book, Positive Addiction, reinforces this psychological fact. To get rid of bad habits one must replace them with good habits. I hope you enjoy this video that will help you explore what YOUR fight is all about. If your just starting out there is no better place than the workout on the What’s YOUR fight website. Good luck and Best Wishes!

Louisiana based multiple business owner Daryn Clark applies the principles of ‘Southern Ingenuity’ to his latest endeavor, the mixed martial arts video website Whatsyourfight.com.

By Jonathan Widran

We’ve all heard about good old fashioned Southern Hospitality, but Northern Louisiana based multiple business owner Daryn Clark has put his trademark on a concept called Southern Ingenuity—the name of the successful service provider company he’s operated for nearly 20 years (www.southerningenuityinc.com) as well as an apt description of the progressive, pro-active principles he’s applying to his latest endeavor, the Mixed Martial Arts Conditioning website What’s Your Fight?
Although Clark began studying kung fu in high school and trained early on in Judo and Tae Kwon Do, it was the tremendous stress of working with Medicaid and running his 140 plus employee companies serving so many disabled people (originally for various small group homes and provider agency programs, then later as president of his own company) that led him back to martial arts in his late 30s.

A longtime instructor at Clyde Stanley’s School of Martial Arts in Minden, Louisiana, Clark has earned a fourth degree black belt in Isshinryu karate and a black belt in Ju Jitsu and competed in national and international tournaments; in addition to Isshinryu and Ju Jitsu, he teaches boxing, San Soo and Muay Thai. For the past four years, he has served on the Isshinryu Hall

of Fame Board of Directors as Vice President and has recently received his certification as a Mixed Martial Arts Conditioning Coach, through NESTA (National Exercise and Strength Trainers Association).

While he’s never drawn a salary for his work with students in martial arts, the natural born entrepreneur is excited about the revenue generating possibilities of What’s Your Fight?, a scientifically based online MMA conditioning program for anyone who, as its website says, wants to get into fighting shape.

The site’s 50-plus instructional exercise videos teach the proper technique for each workout for beginners and advanced MMA enthusiasts, with goals set on each exercise regarding sets, repetitions and the pace of the exercise. The site also introduces the NESTA Strength Training Pyramid, which offers a progression based workout that helps users achieve their goals safely and effectively. The GAS theory, Fitts and Posners Three Stage Model of Motor Learning and the study of Kinematic Chains were also utilized in the development of the WYF training progressions. The site also teaches self-defense and relaxation techniques.

At first glance, Clark’s passion for martial arts would seem at odds with his successful “day job” in provider services, but in both endeavors, he is devoted to helping people become the best they can be and reach their highest potential. The chapter he wrote for The Win Book (an anthology dedicated to contemporary business strategies, penned by successful entrepreneurs across the spectrum) is dedicated to the idea that staying physically fit and healthy can be profitable for business.

During his days training people from California to Tennessee in Isshinryu and Ju Jitsu, he realized the enormity of the market for people who need to work out but don’t or are working out but going about it in ways that can be counterproductive or cause injury. He found novel ways to motivate the 122 employees who work out of Southern Ingenuity’s three locations to exercise. First was “Laps For Lucre”: if employees walked a lap around one of the building’s long circular driveways, they earned a buck; if they ran, two dollars. He later amped this up with “Laps For Life.” Besides good exercise, it was a way for his employees to “de-stress” after long days and weeks dealing hands on with the many “consumers” of varying disabilities that Southern Ingenuity provides round the clock primary care for.

When Clark founded the company in 1991 with $150 of his own money, he could never have imagined that he would eventually build a multi-million dollar business with 140 employees; over the years, Southern Ingenuity has collected over $45 million from Medicaid and other government funds to help provide care for people of varying ages and degrees of disability.

After receiving his masters in Marriage and Family Counseling from Northeast Louisiana University, he quickly realized that counseling people his whole life wasn’t going to fulfill him. In 1986, he experienced what he considers a life changing first visit to a small group home (aka an “intermediate care facility”) for men with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Shreveport. He felt a calling to work within the service delivery systems established by Louisiana and supported by the Federal Government to help people stay in their community.

“Shortly thereafter, I began working for Caddo Bossier ARC, running and supervising two, then later three of their homes, which housed six men each,” says Clark. “I grew fast in that company and soon ran their entire residential program. I took some of the knowledge I had from teaching introductory computer classes while still in school and applied it to the paper records that the government demanded. I wound up creating the Active Treatment Paperless System, which streamlined all the notes, schedules and figures related to care giving.

“I started getting job offers from Southern Louisiana,” he adds, “and eventually ran three different companies in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, implementing not only my paperless system but also developing fleet management systems for transportation and a human resource system. I always believed in the concept of dynamic partnership and worked closely with computer programming experts to make these things happen. In 1991, Louisiana implemented and designed a home and community based waiver program that allowed some of the higher functioning disabled men and women that had lived in group homes to move out on their own. As they received an opportunity for independence, I saw the possibilities to help provide them services by starting Southern Ingenuity.”

One of the first waiver providers in the state, Southern Ingenuity has grown to serve more Louisianans in need with offices in Natchitoches, Homer, Shreveport—and for its first 15 years, a base office in New Orleans which was later destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Southern Ingenuity helped over 60 families evacuate that terrible storm and the aftermath that followed. The company was the first provider to be selected in the federally mandated downsizing of Louisiana’s institutions in 1996. “Consumers” who had lived in the institution forover 40 years were now experiencing life in a real community through Southern Ingenuity’s efforts. Clark worked directly with the Federal Justice Department to assure that the services of those in the institution were transferable to their own home in the community. The first people out of Pinecrest Institution are still consumers of SI some 14 years later.

Beyond working to “mainstream” physically and developmentally disabled people, the company also provides assistance to the elderly; with a caregiver’s help, many can stay in their longtime homes rather than be put in nursing facilities. Clark has played a key role in helping the Department of Health and Hospitals make important changes to the services in Louisiana. He was part of a diverse committee that was charged with getting a community based service system accepted by the Federal Government; he and SI were one of only three providers on the 12 person committee.

Services range from children’s services, family training, attendant care services, temporary out of home care, crisis intervention, home and vehicle modifications, supervised

independent living, family home assistance and case supervision.

Clark sees a distinct parallel between helping improve the lives of the “consumers” in his company’s charge and his work with kids in martial arts settings, where the skills he imparts build self esteem, self-confidence and an improved attitude towards schoolwork. Some of the higher functioning consumers even participate in some of his classes at Clyde Stanley’s. If you visit the What’s Your Fight? website, you will encounter a bald African American gentleman named Willie, who has been in the care of SI for many years. When he was 19, Willie was living with foster parents but wanted out of that situation. With the help of a lawyer, Clark ensured Willie’s release from foster care and helped set him up in an apartment in New Orleans. After Katrina, Willie moved up north to live near Clark and his family—and he now takes exceptional defense classes and is testing for his black belt.

Another incredible story that reminds Clark of the way he and his company have impacted and improved countless lives involves Kenny and Ed, two men in wheelchairs with Cerebral Palsy who were part of a class action lawsuit regarding the living conditions at an institution in Texas (where Louisiana once farmed out some of its “consumers”) that was more like a concentration camp, barbed wires and all. As plaintiffs in the case, Kenny and Ed were entitled to anything they wanted and needed—and Clark helped them secure their own apartment. Clark has helped both of them work out to the best of their abilities at the DOJO Training Center, and one day Kenny even managed to get out of his chair and back in it without any assistance whatsoever after a time working out on the mats. Kenny now gets into and out of his chair with complete independence.

“I live for these moments when I get to see someone I have taught win a championship fight, or to see Ed’s face light up when he finally got an electric wheelchair and could move himself around,” says Clark. “Both fields are tremendously rewarding on a personal level, and while it gets crazy at SI because Medicaid changes their payment rules every six months, I have three directors to help me sort things out. I may get frustrated at times with the business aspects, but all I have to do is spend hours with my consumers and I remember why I’m doing what I’m doing. There’s a tremendous peace that comes from knowing that what I am accomplishing is making other people’s lives better.

“It’s as if I am hard wired to help people be all they can be and get everything they can out of their lives,” he adds. “I am dedicated to that, it’s in my DNA. This next step I’m taking with the health business with What’s Your Fight? fits perfectly into my life because it is also about helping people do things they never thought they could do. I am hoping that ten years from now, I will be reading success stories about lives that were saved from following my website and its workouts. I’ve never brought my fitness and training ideas to the masses and I am excitied to see where this endeavor takes me and how many people I can help.”

An article from the Louisiana Advocacy Center – A very good read!

Nursing homes have been draining Louisiana’s resources while people with disabilities wait inordinate amounts of time for services in the community.

Fact: Louisiana keeps spending more on a service that people don’t want

Over the past 11 years, despite clear evidence that people with disabilities have the right and the desire to live and receive services in their homes, Louisiana has maintained, and even increased spending on segregated nursing home services. During these same 11 years, demand for nursing homes services has dwindled. The population private nursing homes in Louisiana has decreased from 34,727 in 2000 to 29,392 in 2010. Yet, during that time, spending on private nursing homes has increased from $503,762,909 in 2000 to $737,529,166 in 2010. An additional $20,735,439 was spent on the two State nursing homes in 2010.

Nursing home rates have increased in every year since at least FY 2003, even as numbers of individuals served in nursing homes have steadily declined. In SFY 2011, the nursing home Medicaid per diem reimbursement was increased by approximately $8 per patient per day or 8.5%. Annually, Louisiana’s long-term care budget includes over $23 million in payments to nursing homes for empty nursing home beds.

Fact: Louisiana is cutting the services that people DO want

At the same time nursing homes are seeing these increases in spending, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is cutting Long Term-Personal Care Services from 42 hours a week to a maximum of 32 hours a week, with no exceptions to prevent unnecessary institutionalization, and no plan to assure people access to services in their homes. These reductions fall most heavily on the most vulnerable group of people with disabilities-those who have the most severe disabilities and the most critical service needs. When individuals in need of personal care assistance do not have enough help, they are at risk of going hungry, experiencing dehydration, and suffering injuries due to falls, burns, bedsores, and contractures. Inadequate levels of help reduce the ability of people with disabilities to live independently and increase their risk of institutionalization and death.

Fact: Louisiana’s spending on nursing homes versus community-based care is way out of balance

In 2011, Louisiana will spend approximately 73% of its Medicaid long- term care budget on institutional nursing home services and only 27% on community-based services. Louisiana has one of the h

ighest, if not the highest, number of nursing home beds per capita in the nation, and institutionalizes a higher percentage of its population over the age of 85 than any other state.

In 2009, Louisiana had 14,163 people on waiting lists for its aged and disabled adults waivers and ranked 38th in per capita spending on home- and community based waivers for the aged and disabled, expending only $15.85 per capita.

Fact: Home and community-based services are, overall, less expensive than nursing home care

Home and community based services are cost-effective. For example, the average cost of services for a person on the LT-PCS program is considerably less than the cost of maintaining a person in a nursing facility, and it has been so since the inception of the program.

Despite these facts, home and community based services have been cut dramatically. Rates paid provider agencies for LT-PCS services (which include all overhead, employers’ share of taxes, workers’ compensation premiums, training, and recruitment costs, as well as direct care worker salaries131), have been reduced 17.4% since February of 2009 and remain far below the national average.

So, to summarize, in a time of immense deficits, Louisiana continues to buy the Cadillac services people don’t want instead of the Ford people do want. Why? Maybe you should ask your legislator.

A further analysis of your ability to maintain a healthy life balance can be done rather easily. The questions are easy to ask, yet the answers may be hard to swallow. Let’s start with you and your personal health. You are your greatest asset, whether in business or family. If you are not living a healthy life then you should expect a shorter one. Not only is life shorter when you don’t focus on your personal health but you are living a lower quality of life during that shorter period. The lower quality of a life, void of any balance when it comes to your personal health, leads to depression, lethargy, greater health problems and lost time with work and family.

I received my calling in life a long time ago. I know I am here to help people find balance. We have to start with YOU. Are you overweight? Are you morbidly obese? Do you have health problems (diabetes type II, high blood pressure, stress related illnesses)? Are you in elite fitness condition? Do you ever just sit and listen to your own heart and breath (don’t laugh)? Do you find 3 hours a week to take care of yourself via exercise? Were you once in great shape but find age is now “taking a toll” on you? These are a few tough questions that need an honest answer from you. Balance starts with taking care of yourself, and 3 hours a week gives 97.3% of your waking time to do anything OTHER THAN exercise. That’s right, a 2.8%time commitment to your personal health will go a LONG, LONG way. Without personal health; work, family and spirituality will suffer greatly. You can start to find equilibrium with a simple 2.8% time investment. If you can’t do that…. Stop reading now.

Work and family are of great importance to most of us. We usually spend more time at work than with family so we’ll explore this double bind. Work brings us the funds to pay for what happens in life. The more you love what you do for these funds the less it feels like work and has the potential to become a “calling”. I define “calling” as work that is fun, internally rewarding, and is a natural part of who you are. The number of different types of callings is a variable and limitless as the types of people who walk the earth. What I love to do others would dislike passionately, and that’s the way it is supposed to be as we are all individuals. If you love what you do and on most days feel accomplishment during and after the workday, you may indeed have found your calling. The double bind mentioned comes into play when we can’t shut off our work when we are around family or blame work for not allowing us time for Personal Health growth.

Family can have many definitions. Families may or may not include spouses, children, grandchildren, parents, siblings and so on. Your family is your family. Some families have none of the aforementioned components and are based on close relationships that don’t have to be “blood” related. One common denominator in defining family is that you need them and they need you.

Balancing family is no more simple or difficult than the other components discussed. Family takes dedicated time of interaction and looses the “take for granted syndrome” so many of us have when it comes to those in our families. We often make mental commitments to family when at a funeral of someone close to us. I have found that loosing someone close brings to the forefront of our minds the absolute importance of those around us. Not taking tomorrow as a given right or an absolute certainty will help you.

How can I keep indifference for my family from creeping into my life? Planning for balance in your life as a whole will help you to compartmentalize time for self, family, work and possibly spirituality. Notice the word PLANNING. Balance does not come without forethought and trial and error. Setting aside daily time to interact with family is vital. How do you know when you are really interacting? A great beginning is easy to measure – eye contact. If you go through the day without a few minutes of real conversation that involves eye contact with the family around you then you may be slipping into indifference or at least giving off that indifferent vibe. Make time every day for eye contact and conversation that is personal for each person in your family that lives with you. For people in your family that are not living with you phone contact that is predictable can really help (every Saturday for example). Engage the family you have with eye contact and meaningful conversation and you will find balance, more harmony and greater peace within the family.

Spirituality is the belief that there is a power greater than you that impacts you, your family and the world. There are many “brands” of spirituality and hopefully one of them has brought you the feeling that you are not here on this earth alone. Carrying your higher power with you can help balance all the aspects already discussed. Getting with people who believe as you believe can build a community for you beyond family and this will help when things get tough or your balance has gone haywire.

Peace can be found in time spent alone and quiet listening to your breath and heart. This brings us back to the core of balance, YOU. Without you seeking balance it will not come. The times in your life where you cease working towards balance leaves you and your life “to the winds” that come and go taking control from you. Fight for balance. Fight for control of your time, for as it’s been said “put your money (time) where your mouth is”. You can’t say it once and have poise come, it will take practice.

If you’d like more information or any help in finding your balance your questions are welcome.

Unstable Workout Tools are the Best for Advancing Stabilizing Muscle Function
The role of muscles stabilizing the body is a critical role indeed. For the mixed martial artist, training must include a good deal of work on improving the muscles ability to stabilize. The stabilizing role in a muscle is responsible for stabilizing an adjacent segment within the body. Without strong stabilizing muscle function around the joints, including your spine, and the core, a person stands a better chance of finding injury in training.

Barbells are less stable than machines. Dumbbells are less stable than the barbell. With the dumbbells each arm works independently from the other and the hands can me moved in a supinated or pronated fashion working many more stabilizers than the barbell could. Sand and bands are less stable than the dumbbells and the list goes on.

One test for you to feel the difference in using a stable exercise versus an unstable exercise is the simple pushup. Do 10 pushups using the hands to floor method we all know. Now do 10 pushups on a Pilate’s ball or some other type of ball. You will feel your core engage a great deal more on the ball. You will find the 10 rep goal on the ball is more difficult because it is using many more muscles for stabilizing as well as the prime movers for the pushup. The more unstable the device the more stabilizing muscle function you’re going to work.

Use unstable tools very carefully at first until you are acquainted with them and your body is ready for the additional strains the unstable workout tools demand. Have fun and get to work!
